Intro to editing

The glooming

What is editing? It's the process of selecting from different shots joining them together to tell a story.

Why are long shots used? The choice of a long shot is used to remind the viewers of the characters location.

What is 'non-diagetic' sound? When music is being played but only the viewers can hear the music being played not the character.

How do we know she is bending down to pick up the ring? (what shots are used and why)
Close up of the face to show the viewers that she's looking down at something and then cut to a close up of the hands to show her picking up a ring.

What is Elliptical editing? Cuts two shots together to keep the story moving along quicker.

Hustle
Overhead establishing shot - what does this achieve? Is used to show the characters location/environment.

What is Shot-Reverse-Shot? Cutting back and forth usually between the characters when having a conversation.

What is Eye line matching? Angles of eyes of each character is aligned

What is a wipe? To move the action to a different location

What is the effect of using quick cuts? Keeps the story moving on, creates a fast rhythm, keeps the audience on their toes.

Editing: the invisible art

What is crosscutting? varied from close ups to long shots. series of shots being cut together back and forth

What are reaction shots? when an event is happening the film and then the shots cuts back to audience or main character for reaction

What is seamless editing? The drama of a situation and the way sequences would be constructed the work of the editor would go unnoticed.

What is a jump cut? when a shot is skipped

What is a flash back and what does it achieve? takes the audience from one point in time to another, a key moment in the characters life to explain how they got where they are now.

How can editing be used poetically?
