Intro to editing

The glooming

What is editing? It's the process of selecting from different shots joining them together to tell a story.

Why are long shots used? The choice of a long shot is used to remind the viewers of the characters location.

What is 'non-diagetic' sound? When music is being played but only the viewers can hear the music being played not the character.

How do we know she is bending down to pick up the ring? (what shots are used and why)
Close up of the face to show the viewers that she's looking down at something and then cut to a close up of the hands to show her picking up a ring.

What is Elliptical editing? Cuts two shots together to keep the story moving along quicker.

Hustle
Overhead establishing shot - what does this achieve? Is used to show the characters location/environment.

What is Shot-Reverse-Shot? Cutting back and forth usually between the characters when having a conversation.

What is Eye line matching? Angles of eyes of each character is aligned

What is a wipe? To move the action to a different location

What is the effect of using quick cuts? Keeps the story moving on, creates a fast rhythm, keeps the audience on their toes.

Editing: the invisible art

What is crosscutting? varied from close ups to long shots. series of shots being cut together back and forth

What are reaction shots? when an event is happening the film and then the shots cuts back to audience or main character for reaction

What is seamless editing? The drama of a situation and the way sequences would be constructed the work of the editor would go unnoticed.

What is a jump cut? when a shot is skipped

What is a flash back and what does it achieve? takes the audience from one point in time to another, a key moment in the characters life to explain how they got where they are now.

How can editing be used poetically?

Evaluation

What was good about my video profile was the different use of shots at the beginning and that the music in the background wasn't too loud, the volume was just right. I could've varied my use of shorts though and found a better location with better lighting so the video came out to look all together as a whole. What went well was the fact there was no noise in the background for my audio, which meant that my voice could be heard clearly, but I needed to improve the quality of the sound so my voice could be heard more clearly. As a whole, I could've improved the entire quality of the video since it looked like it was rushed. The audio and the video wasn't really syncing together very well so that's another thing I could improve on, there were times when I'd be talking in the audio and then my lips in the video wouldn't be moving. To make the video look more professional, instead of the cameraman just holding the camera with his hands, a tripod should be used, so that the cameras not moving around much, so the camera movement needs to be improved. Another thing that could help my video look more professional is the use of different locations. Varied locations would've helped to make my video look more interesting because the standard of it would make someone sleep. Because I enrolled late I had to jump straight in to the filming so I wasn't able to plan and when I did do planning, I had other tasks on top of the editing, so to improve my video I should keep up with my timetable so that way I have more time to spend improving the image and sound quality of my video. I could improve my shots as well to make sure they are smooth and clean cut. Some of the feedbacks I've received were quite positive, but I was given a lot of advice on what to improve on my video and how to improve on them. For example I need to make my video more interesting instead of them making people wanting to sleep and I should play around more with my edits and camera angles. When using sequential shooting, I should shoot each shot at least 3 to 4 times so I have more options to choose from.

Analysis of interactive media

Since the writing and publication of the Content Analysis Guidebook, there has been increased interest in interactive media content. Interactive video allows an individual to select and sequence instruction in a way that is meaningful to them. The fundamental difference between old media and newer interactive media.Users are in charge of much of what content looks like, with some restrictions. Web 2.0 users can create content within the templates provided by sites. How do you select content for inclusion in a sample? With games, similar procedures can be used that have been used in TV and movie content analyses—e.g., selecting the most successful titles. With Web 2.0 sites, there is greater difficulty due to (potentially) millions of equal sampling units. How do you store units for analysis? With games, typical procedure has been to record games as players play and store content on DVD (though DVR options now). With Web 2.0 pages, options include:Print screen, Saving the file, Creating PDFs and also software options for video/audiolAnalyzing the archived content. Includes:Identifying units of analysis (e.g., individual user posts, game characters). Creating a codebook. Creating coding sheets (may be electronic now). Training, coding, intercoder reliability assessment, etc.
